GoldMind ArtsOrganization Associated with Program
GoldMind Arts brings art education, lifelong learning, and creativity to older adults in Chicago. GoldMind is dedicated to the integration of arts programming in healthy aging, treatment for neurocognitive disorders and memory loss, caregiver support, and professional development. It provides classes, trainings, and workshops led by professional teaching artists throughout the city of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
All GoldMind arts programs have an educational component including art history, literature, and even chemistry. Many participants live in facilities because of cognitive or physical impairments, so GoldMind often focuses on creating permanent art installations such as murals, mosaics, and mobiles within these facilities.
GoldMind Arts also trains professional caregivers and nurses to incorporate art and creativity in the lives of their patients and loved ones. This not only brings meaningful art to countless older adults, including those with dementia, but also provides participants a new way to relate to their loved ones, residents, and patients. Workshops may be for individuals or groups on location or at Lillstreet Art Center.
GoldMind Arts, LLC was established in March 2012 by Fabiana Glazer. Ms. Glazer is an experienced professional who has been working in the field of arts and aging as a volunteer, professional teaching artist, and program director since 1998. After the National Endowment for the Arts sponsored the “Arts and Aging” training hosted by the Creative Center in November 2011, GoldMind was created to further promote the use of the arts for this population. Current programs are at various senior centers in the city of Chicago, the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the School of the Art Institute’s graduate program.
This program is evaluated on an ongoing basis by staff and participants through the use of interviews and individual assessments.
This field is incredibly rewarding, but it presents difficult challenges. Despite the increasing number of older adults and the mounting evidence for the numerous benefits of arts education, programming is severely lacking. Strive to vocalize the importance of the arts to change the culture within arts and aging organizations.
Finding a skilled teaching artist who is experienced in working with older adults is extremely important. A trained teaching artist will be able to help reluctant participants engage in arts programming.
