Beautiful Minds: Carol Siegel
At 75 years of age Carol Siegel of Alexandria, Virginia lives a very active and creative lifestyle. Nominated by Arts for the Aging where she has worked as a teaching artist for the last 16 years, Carol is celebrated as one of the nation’s most Beautiful Minds. Carol had a gratifying career in photography that included teaching younger people but it wasn’t until the age of 55 did Carol decide to go back to school and receive a master’s degree in Expressive Arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Working with people through expressive arts made its way into Carol’s life while she spent time documenting an Alexandria neighborhood through a grant she received from the Alexandria Commission for the Arts. This project gave Carol the opportunity to build a connection with the people she photographed. Carol wanted to bring out their stories in an expressive way.
Carol loves photography so going back to school later in her life was challenging for her but also exciting. Carol discovered a new way of connecting with other people. When asked what advice she had for others hoping to live a long and productive life, Carol provided these insightful words, “Stay hopeful and optimistic. Have a sense of humor. See the irony in life. Have a curious nature and try to delight simple pleasures. Accept all parts of yourself. The dark and the light.”
