Baby Boomers Return To the Multiplex, and Hollywood Notices

When the AARP Magazine began its Movies for Grownups column 12 years ago, it had trouble finding enough material to fill the page. Today, movies with central themes of aging, such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Dustin Hoffman’s Quartet have had great success at the box office. AARP notes that Hollywood has finally recognized the baby boomers as a significant percentage of the moviegoer population. Moreover, there are more actors maintaining an active presence in Hollywood than ever before. Most notably, Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest person ever nominated for the best actress Golden Globe at age 85. Her movie Amour also revolves around a theme of aging and is nominated for best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best foreign film.
