Barbara Dane: A Versatile Voice with a Political Purpose
In the 1960s singer Barbara Dane combined a unique blend of jazz, folk, and blues music with political and social activism to inspire a generation of musicians including a teenage Bonnie Raitt. Some four decades later, at the age of 83, Dane continues to perform and inspire a younger musicians and activists. The longevity of Dane's career is all the more amazing when one considers the principled stands she took along the way, like refusing to play venues that wouldn't allow her to perform with African-Americans. While those decisions almost certainly hurt her popularity, it was all worth it to Dane, who says, "I like that feeling that comes over one when you know you've done something that will mean something valuable to somebody else."
