Giving Seniors a Voice Through Art-Making
In 2009, the Haliburton Highlands Arts Council launched Visible Voices, a program that trained caregivers to use art therapy with isolated seniors. The participants were able to practice sculpting, storytelling, dance, and many other activities. Researchers monitored the seniors’ progress during these arts experiences and published the piece in a journal on arts and health in the U.K. Visible Voices also conducted a similar program for seniors with depression. The seven month initiative used art, stories, and video technology to increase self-confidence and happiness within the seniors. Both programs were extremely successful in their goals.
