Making Art Boosts Seniors’ Psychological Resilience

As individuals approach retirement from their careers, they begin to start worrying about what they’ll do with all their time, and how they’ll continue to have high self esteem. A study of 28 people ages 62-70, who had been retired between three months and three years had them participate in 10 weekly two-hour arts classes. Half took a hands-on class, and the other half took an appreciation/history class. They had brain scans before and after the classes, and results showed that those who did hands-on art had a significant improvement in “psychological resilience.” Making art, one researcher wrote, is related to enhanced memory processing.
