Ready to Swim 103 Miles with the Sharks
Diane Nyad, 61, will be swimming the same trip that she failed to do when she was 28, and she’s never been more confident. “Physically, I am much stronger than I was before, although I was faster in my 20s. I feel strong, powerful, and endurance-wise, I’m fit,” said Nyad. The 103-mile trip is expected to take Nyad 60 hours, made more difficult by jelly-fish stings, saltwater swelling of the tongue and the chance of shark attacks. Dr. Michael J. Joyner, a professor of anesthesiology and exercise research at the Mayo Clinic, explains that older athletes do well in endurance sports because of their experience and training.
