S.F. Conference Finds Poetry, Art, Music in Aging Process

The Poetics of Aging Conference occurred in San Francisco from November 16 through November 19 and was by this account a resounding success. The conference had a stated mission of “countering the mainstream understanding of aging as decline and/or disease with a more expansive, humanistic, and creative — that is poetic — vision and approach.” Poets, artists, psychologists and many more presented on the benefits of creative aging and encore careers. Live performances were aplenty and the event was attended by organizations throughout San Francisco and beyond. Presenter Barry Barkan summed up the overarching meaning of the conference when he said, “Every social movement begins by changing self-image.”
