Using art to overcome cognitive barriers

The Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University has developed an intergenerational art program for people with dementia in nine locations throughout southwestern Ohio. What makes this program different from other arts engagement programs is its intergenerational component. Each elder is paired with a trained college student for the course of a semester to create high quality artwork, as well as providing the opportunity to develop supportive relationships. As the relationship grows and trust develops, “the elder gains the confidence to try new things and take more creative risks.”
