The Trailblazers Name
Curtis Cooper wrote to us about how NCCA's work inspired him to utilize the arts in the Memory Care Unit of Bonaventure Senior Living as an Activity Director. Starting with music and sing-along activities, Curtis saw a positive response from his community as even those with the most advanced dementia were able to participate and make music. He then introduced poetry, and inspired the seniors in his community to write their own Haikus. Finally, Curtis intiated a quilt making project that has the residents cutting, gluing, and designing a colorful quilt that acts as a testament to their desire for arts activities. Curtis stated that, even after three months of activities, he "started noticing improved awareness and vocal interaction, as well as improved abilities to stand on their own, and walk for longer periods. (Not to mention, write a Haiku)." Keep blazing a trail, Curtis!
